2026 Home Service Marketing Statistics for Contractors
LocaliQ's 2025 report puts median home service search-ad costs at $7.85 per click and $90.92 per lead. Costs vary by trade. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found that 54% of consumers would visit a business website after reading positive reviews. The sections below explain the study dates, samples and limits.
Your ad bill tells you what you spent. It takes a little more work to see whether that money brought the right jobs.
Start with the paid-search costs for your trade. The review and call data can help you see what needs attention after a person finds your business.
Sources checked September 14, 2026. The study dates vary. The notes below explain what each number covers.

Paid search benchmarks for home services
LocaliQ’s 2025 search-ad report covers 3,211 US campaigns running from April 1, 2024 to March 21, 2025. It includes Google and Microsoft search ads. Each trade category contains at least 103 campaigns. Its reported averages are medians, which reduce the effect of unusually high or low results. All costs below are US dollars.
The overall cost per click was $7.85 and cost per lead was $90.92.
| Trade in the report | Median cost per lead |
|---|---|
| Air conditioning installation and repair | $127.74 |
| Heating and furnaces | $129.02 |
| Plumbing | $129.02 |
| Electricians and electrical contractors | $93.69 |
| Roofing and gutters | $228.15 |
| Landscaping | $117.92 |
These are historical paid-search results. They do not price an LSA lead, an SEO visit or an identified homeowner record.
What should you do with the lead-cost numbers?
Pull your own results for the same trade and a clear period. Separate emergency repairs from replacement work when you can. An AC tune-up and a full replacement have different values to your business.
Then check the enquiries behind the average. Were they in your service area? Did they need work you actually do? How many became paid jobs?
Example calculation, not customer results: $2,000 in ads brings 20 enquiries and four jobs. That is $100 per enquiry and $500 in ad spend per job. Your wages, materials and other costs still come out of the job revenue.
For channel choices, use the contractor lead-generation platform guide. Keep each source separate so a cheap click cannot be mistaken for a cheap customer.
Review behavior shapes shortlists before the call
BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey used a representative panel of 1,002 US adults. It covers local businesses across categories, rather than contractors alone.
| What respondents said | Share |
|---|---|
| They would only use a business rated at least four stars | 68% |
| They look for reviews written within the previous three months | 74% |
| They would visit the business website after reading positive reviews | 54% |
These are survey responses. They do not prove that changing a star rating will produce a particular number of bookings.
Open your own review profile, then follow the website link as a customer would. Can someone quickly confirm that you cover their suburb and do the work they need? Is the phone number easy to find on a mobile screen?
Ask customers for honest feedback after completed jobs. Give a specific reply when a review needs one. Your next customer should be able to understand what happened and how you handled it.
Calls and response time
CallRail’s January 2025 benchmark announcement reports a 14% missed-call rate for home services. The overall research used 1.1 million conversations across several industries. The announcement does not state the home-services sample size or observation dates.
A missed call does not automatically equal a lost job. The useful next step is to find out which callers reached your team later and which never did.
Review unanswered calls during busy hours and after closing. Assign someone to return them. Record the outcome so the same person does not get repeated callbacks from different staff.
There is no verified percentage on this page for how many customers choose the first business to reply. Your own response times and booking records are a better place to test whether quicker follow-up helps.
Website conversion and form behavior
The sources above do not establish a universal form-fill rate for contractor websites. They also do not tell you what share of your visitors can be identified.
For your own site, count calls and forms separately. Remove spam and repeat enquiries before judging lead quality. A form submission, a booked estimate and a completed job each answer a different question.
GA4 can show recorded visitor activity. It will not look up an unknown homeowner’s name or email. PipelineOn visitor identification can provide available homeowner details when a match is found, giving your team another way to follow up.
Keep those records separate from people who asked for a quote. Then measure which follow-ups produce useful conversations and jobs.

Channel mix and lead source benchmarks
There is no fixed split of ads, SEO and referrals that suits every contractor. Your service area, capacity and type of work change the decision.
Review spend and paid jobs by source each month. Keep repeat customers visible. If a source brings plenty of enquiries but little work, inspect those records before buying more traffic.
If postcards are part of your follow-up, compare DOPE Marketing, Lob and Handwrytten. Check what visitor information you receive, how recipients are selected and the total mailing cost. PipelineOn connects to mailing tools through integrations; print and postage cost extra.
Sources and how to use the CSV
This page is a selection of published research. PipelineOn did not run these studies or combine their samples into a new average.
The CSV download contains the same 12 figures shown above. Each row includes its original source, report year, observation period where available, population and check date. Currency values use USD. A percentage value of 68 means 68 percent.
When citing a figure, name the original publisher and study year. Keep the sample limitation with it. The September 2026 update date tells you when we checked the sources, rather than when all of the research took place.
Correction, September 14, 2026: We replaced incorrect paid-search costs, updated the review section to the 2026 survey and removed claims we could not substantiate about response speed, anonymous visitors, channel mix, email and SMS performance. The CSV and dataset description have been corrected too.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good cost per lead for a home service business?
Start with the benchmark for your trade, then check the jobs those leads produce. A price below a published median can still be poor value if the enquiries are outside your area or rarely become paid work.
Are these all statistics collected in 2026?
No. This guide was checked in September 2026. Its sources cover different periods, which are stated beside each section and in the CSV. The paid-search figures come from a report using 2024 and 2025 campaigns.
Do consumer review surveys measure contractor customers only?
No. The BrightLocal survey covers US adults choosing local businesses across categories. It provides useful context, but it does not establish a contractor-only conversion rate.
Does an identified website visitor count as a new enquiry?
Track the two separately. An identification record gives your team available visitor details. An enquiry means the person contacted your business. Measure which follow-ups turn into conversations, appointments and paid jobs.
